United Way and Thrive Northumberland hold a successful first community-wide collection campaign for Period Promise Northumberland
Northumberland County, ON – During the month of May, Period Promise Northumberland, a partnership of Northumberland United Way and Thrive Northumberland, held its first community-wide campaign collecting more than 5,000 products and nearly $3,000 to put to work towards ending period poverty in our community.
From May 6 to June 3, Northumberland County residents were invited to participate in the collection by making a financial donation or dropping off period products to one of 8 – locations across the community, including the Cobourg Public Library, Community Care Northumberland, Cobourg Fisher’s Foodland, David’s No Frills, Nurturing Health Naturopathic Clinic, Nourish Boutique Spa, Salvation Army and Northumberland United Way’s office.
“A special thank you to our partners who accepted donations on our behalf and to the grocery stores that allowed customers to purchase and donate products while doing their essential shopping,” says Bobbie Dawson, CEO, Northumberland United Way. “We were conscious of not encouraging extra stops outside the home during the stay-at-home orders, and we’re thrilled to see that so many individuals chose to instead make a financial donation to support Period Promise.”
Thank you as well to Domino’s Cobourg for organizing a collection campaign among their staff members and to Shoppers Drug Mart Cobourg for donating on behalf of their business.
In Canada, almost one-quarter of Canadians say they have struggled to afford menstrual products for themselves or their children (Plan International, Period Stigma Report, 2018). Period Promise Northumberland is a local response to this stark statistic. All products collected during the campaign will be immediately redistributed to individuals and non-profit organizations in our community, while financial donations will be used to purchase additional products.
“We’re now working with the over 20 partner organizations that represent Thrive Northumberland to anticipate the needs of their clients and to organize packages for delivery,” says Nicole Beatty, Project Coordinator, Thrive Northumberland.
